Athlete, Take Note

Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. He had reigned forty years over Israel, seven years in Hebron and thirty three in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his rule was firmly established.

1 Kings 2:10-12

The list of David's accomplishments are long. And yet, when he dies the story quickly moves on to the next King of Israel. There's no lengthy obituary or reminder of what David accomplished. There's no celebration of a life well lived. Just this: David died, Solomon was next up.

David lived much of his life for an audience of One but the narrative moves on just fine without him. It's humbling to think about for the rest of us. As athletes, we are some of the most celebrated groups in the world today. In the eyes of our culture, what we do on the playing field matters deeply. So what happens when our careers are over? What happens when our time on earth is done?

The story of God will continue.

Despite our highs and our lows, our championships and defeats, our records broken and injuries suffered, God's story will continue to go on.

Don't hear what I am not saying. I'm not saying what you are doing right now doesn't matter. It absolutely does. But take the mountain off of your back that has the words engraved on the side: "It all depends on me." It doesn't. Take a deep breath. God's got this. God's in control.

Continue to live today for an audience of one. Then wake up tomorrow and do it again. And trust God is in complete control of His story.
