Athlete, Whatever You Do, Do It For Jesus

Colossians 3:17

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

This one verse challenges me every time I read it. It doesn't matter where I am, what stage of life I am in, or who is around me. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."  For me, and I hope for you, this is one of those verses that gets to my heart.

It does not say only in certain times and places are we to honor God, but it ways "whatever you do." Not just in public with people you like but in public with people who you are competing against (and maybe are our rivals). Not just when people are around, but in the dark of a late night when you are all alone or in the hidden places of your house/apartment. Not only in community with Christians but in community with those who are not Christians.

We are to live for God (He is preeminent) with whatever we do, either in word or deed.

Doing "all in the name of the Lord Jesus" means bringing honor to Christ in every aspect and activity of daily living. As a Christian, you represent Christ at all times - wherever you go and whatever you say.

What impression do people have of Christ when they see or talk to you? What impressions do they have of Christ when you compete, practice, or lift weights?

The two challenges for you today are:

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live for Jesus because today is another day to put Jesus in his proper place of supremacy in all areas of your life.
  2. Memorize and marinate on Colossians 3:17 and let it sink deeply into your heart, mind, actions, and words.

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17
