Athlete, Put it to Death
Colossians 3:5-8
"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth."
You are no longer who you were. You are new and that means you need to put some things to death. What does it mean to "put to death"?
The language of putting to death indicates that Christians have to take severe measures to conquer sin. It’s not something that is just going to go away when you put your faith and trust in Jesus. It is an active thing we must do.
Very simply it means get rid of it.
As an athlete you understand this idea. Think back to when you were starting your sport. Did you do it right? Chances are you did not but that you kept doing it. Your technique was terrible but you kept doing it. Then one day a coach came to you and gave you pointers. You could change your stance a little. Or move your hand to this place her. Or hold it this way.
At this point you had a decision to make. Are you going to get rid of the old way and do the new for your benefit and the benefit of your teammates? Yes it will be hard and you will have to make a conscious effort to do it, but as you put to death the old habits, you become something new and better.
It takes effort.
It takes hard work.
It takes honesty to look at this list and say I don’t want that in me or my relationships.
And most importantly, it takes the help of the Holy Spirit to put those things to death.
Pray this today: Holy Spirit help me to be honest with myself and help me to WANT to put these things to death. Show me where that is not true and convict me. I know you know what is best. You are preement. Help me to be your new creation and be the person you desire me to be by putting off the way I used to live.
