Athlete, He Reminds Us

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." John 14:26

"Hudson, did you remember you helmet? What about your water bottle? Do you have your cleats?"

Every day last week as we left the house I had the same set of questions for my son. He just started playing tackle football and easily forgets everything he needs to bring with him. One of my jobs, as his dad, is to remind him what he needs to play the game he's learning to love.

God gives us the Holy Spirit for a similar reason. His (remember, the Holy Spirit is not an "it") job is to remind us of who we are in Christ and how to proper align ourselves with God the Father. All of this in an effort to make us look more and more like Jesus.

And the amazing thing to me is that He does this out of love for us. I wish I could say the same thing about my role as a dad. I often remind my kids out of annoyance that they've forgotten. God's a better dad than me and the Holy Spirit has more patience than I do.

Challenge: Invite the Holy Spirit into your day today by giving Him permission to remind you of what you need to look more like Jesus. A simple prayer like this may be a good one to express to Him: "Holy Spirit I am forgetful. I go long stretches of my day without even thinking about God. Would you help remind me today whenver you need to? Help me live in step with you today."
