Athlete, We Are Family

We are adopted into God's family! This may be so familiar to you that you haven't stopped to think about how amazing and crazy this is. We are created beings, broken by our sin, but invited into the family of the Divine. And not just invited in as a stepchild or a 3rd cousin. No, we are adopted in as son or daughter of the King!

Let me give you a few truths to meditate on today as you slow down to think about your identity as a child of God.

Eph 1:4-6  "In love, He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved."

John 1:12 "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God"

Gal 3:25-26 "But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith."

Gal 4:4-7 "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God."

What about this one that we unpacked a bit in the Sunday Digital Chapel (if you missed it, go ahead and watch it now for 15 minutes)
Rom 8:14-17  "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"  The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him."

1 John 3:1 "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him."

1 John 5:2 "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments."

Take some time now to reflect on the truth of those scriptures. It can help to write some prayers or thoughts down to help you think deeper and focus better. If we could let this identity as an adopted child of God rule our thoughts, influence our actions and motivate us in sport and in life, WOW we would be experiencing some incredible things!  Go ahead, dream, record some thoughts on what would change in your life if you could live out of this identity as a child of God.
