Athlete, You Are Never Alone
Hebrews 13:5 says "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt alone? It's easy to feel alone when you are physically by yourself. But it can be easy to feel alone even in the midst of a lot of people when you don't feel like anyone "gets you". Has that ever been the case for you?
On Sunday I talked about the examples of not feeling accepted by my team when I struck out. Nobody would talk to me and in that moment I felt like I had failed everybody. As an athlete, no matter if you play an individual sport or are on a team, there are coaches, teammates and fans around you when you are performing. Because success looks a certain way to coaches, teammates, fans and even ourselves, we can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform a certain way.
When we care about other people's opinions we can start to have internal fears and insecurities that we won't meet other's expectations. When you don't meet those expectations, people can tend to respond with a negative view toward you, making you feel isolated.
In Hebrews 13, the promise is given by the Lord in verse 5 that "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
The words leave and forsake are so critical for us to think about when it comes to the Lord being with us. When someone is with you but either has to leave or chooses to leave, they physically depart from our presence. When someone forsakes us, it is almost like they reject us, which can leave us feeling abandoned.
In Christ, you are never alone because His Spirit lives within you and is a constant presence. Think about that. You are never alone! Even when the coaches, teammates, fans, or whoever else doesn't "get you" or has a certain opinion about you, you still have the Spirit with you. If you don't have your best game or competition and people leave your side or forsake you, it's ok. You aren't alone.
