Athlete, Worship God No Matter What

"If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." Daniel 3:18

Do you know the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego? They are Israelites living in exile under the authority of a different king. This king makes a statue, of himself, and instructs everyone in the kingdom to bow down and worship it. Essentially, to worship him. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refuse to do it. So the king decides to put them into a furnace and have them burned alive. Spoiler alert, God saves them.

But before He does, this is how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego respond to the king in Daniel 3:17,18: "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

Did you catch that? God can rescue us, but He may choose not to. Even if he does not, we will still worship him over you.

Athlete, does your worship to God have strings attached? If you knew that worshipping God wouldn't heal your injury faster (or prevent it in the first place) or secure that personal best or win whatever championship you've been chasing, would you still worship Him?

There's no other application besides that question today. And it's a big one. God wants worship directed at Him, not what He can do for us on the playing field. Will you committed to worshipping Him even if He doesn't grant you athletic success?
